PSG v Olympique de Marseille: head-to-head record and history of Le Classique

Up to 8 February 2026, the last meeting between the two as of the check on 11 September 2026, Paris Saint-Germain and Olympique de Marseille had played 112 competitive matches, with 53 PSG wins, 24 draws and 35 for OM, according to the LFP table of 5 February 2026 plus the result from three days later. That 112th Classique, at the Parc des Princes, on the 21st matchday of Ligue 1 2025/26, ended 5-0 to PSG, the widest margin recorded in the fixture up to that point, according to the Associated Press and the LFP's records.

Ousmane Dembélé scored two goals and provided one assist, and Luis Enrique, PSG's manager for that match, said, according to the AP, that a 5-0 had never happened before. The first Classique of Ligue 1 2026/27 was scheduled for Sunday 20 September 2026, at 20:45, at the Vélodrome.

The total hides two opposing stories. In the 76 matches from 12 December 1971 to 20 March 2011, OM won 31 and PSG 26, with 19 draws, according to a match-by-match recount of the Wikipedia list. From 27 November 2011, the first Classique after the arrival of Qatar Sports Investments (QSI) at PSG, to 8 February 2026, there were 36 matches: 27 PSG wins, 5 draws and 4 for OM. OM reached 20 March 2011 five wins ahead; from 27 November 2011 to 8 February 2026, PSG opened up a lead of 23, and the balance of 18 up to that date is the difference between the two tallies. The trophy cabinet follows the same pattern: of the 61 trophies on PSG's list on 12 August 2026, 43 came after the arrival of QSI, according to the club. Even the number of OM's French titles changes depending on who is counting.

Where the name comes from, and the age gap between the clubs

The name Le Classique is modelled on El Clásico between Real Madrid and Barcelona, a term the Spanish press borrowed from South American football, according to the English Wikipedia. Olympique de Marseille has existed since 1899, according to the club's website, which credits René Dufaure de Montmirail with its foundation. Paris Saint-Germain was founded on 12 August 1970 through the merger of Stade Saint-Germanois, of Saint-Germain-en-Laye, with Paris Football Club, and reached the top flight in 1971, after one season in the second tier, according to the City of Paris.

The first Classique was played on 12 December 1971, at the Vélodrome. OM were the French champions, and PSG, little more than a year old, were playing their first season in the top flight, according to OM's website. The home side won 4-2, with two goals from Josip Skoblar, according to the English Wikipedia.

1986 to 1993: when the rivalry starts deciding titles

At the end of the 1985/86 season, with OM 12th in the top flight, the businessman Bernard Tapie bought the club, according to OM's website. PSG became French champions for the first time in 1986, according to the club's list.

On 5 May 1989, Franck Sauzée's stoppage-time goal gave OM a 1-0 win over PSG, and OM took the league lead from their rivals and never gave it up, according to the LFP. In a piece dated 4 February 2026, the league divided the rivalry into three phases. The first belonged to Marseille, with 8 OM wins in 11 meetings, matches that on the Wikipedia list run from 5 May 1989 to 15 August 1993, in all competitions.

In 1991, the television channel Canal Plus bought PSG, according to the public radio network ICI. Before the 1992 Classique, Artur Jorge, then PSG's manager, said OM were going to live through hell, and Bernard Tapie, then OM's president, showed the remark to his players in the team talk. The PSG 0-1 OM match of 1992, decided by an Alen Boksic goal, featured 55 fouls and only six yellow cards and became known as the butchery, according to the LFP.

On 26 May 1993, in Munich, OM won the Champions League by beating Milan 1-0 with a Basile Boli header, and the club's website, consulted on 11 September 2026, describes it as the first French club to win it. Three days later, OM beat PSG 3-1 at the Vélodrome and sealed the French title, the fifth in a row by the same website's count.

The 1993 title and the tally that depends on who is counting

The title was taken away. Over the VA-OM affair, a judicial investigation was opened in June 1993, according to OM's website. On 6 September 1993, UEFA excluded the club from the 1993/94 Champions League. On 22 September 1993, the FFF, under pressure from FIFA to impose a punishment, decided to provisionally strip OM of the 1992/93 title until the courts had ruled, according to the Encyclopædia Universalis. The LFP records that the title for that season was not awarded. At the end of 1993/94, OM were administratively relegated to the second tier over the same affair.

Hence the discrepancy. OM's honours page, consulted on 11 September 2026, lists 11 French championships: 1929, 1937, 1948, 1971, 1972, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993 and 2010. The list of champions on the English Wikipedia, in the revision of 14 July 2026, gives OM 9 titles from the professional era, which began in 1932, and 1 amateur title, that of 1928/29; the 1992/93 title appears as stripped. The club's 11, minus the amateur title and the revoked one, make 9.

Across the competitions in the honours table, with a cut-off of 12 August 2026, OM have 27 trophies counting the 9 professional titles, and 29 by the club's own list, consulted on 11 September 2026. The table in the English Wikipedia article on Le Classique, in the revision of 12 August 2026, gives 28, because it uses the 9 and adds the 1957 Coupe Charles Drago.

The Parisian turnaround: from the Cup Winners' Cup to QSI

The oldest European trophy on PSG's list is the 1996 Cup Winners' Cup, won 1-0 against Rapid Vienna. The LFP's second phase is a run of 8 consecutive PSG wins in the fixture, which on the Wikipedia list runs from 26 October 2002 to 10 November 2004, in all competitions. On 29 April 2006, in the first Coupe de France final between the two, PSG won 2-1, according to OM's website.

With Didier Deschamps in charge, OM won the Coupe de la Ligue, the French title and the Trophée des Champions in 2009/10, retained the Coupe de la Ligue and the Trophée des Champions in 2010/11 and took a third consecutive Coupe de la Ligue in 2011/12, according to the club's website. In the Trophée des Champions of 28 July 2010, the 0-0 draw was settled on penalties, with two saves from Steve Mandanda, and OM beat PSG in a final for the first time, according to Wikipedia.

The third phase described by the LFP on 4 February 2026 begins with the arrival of QSI at PSG, in 2011. On 21 May 2016, at the Stade de France, PSG once again beat OM in a Coupe de France final, 4-2, according to the English Wikipedia.

On 13 September 2020, OM won 1-0 in Paris, with a goal from Florian Thauvin, in a match of 36 fouls and 17 cards; the five red cards, for Neymar, Leandro Paredes, Layvin Kurzawa, Jordan Amavi and Darío Benedetto, came in stoppage time at the end of the second half, according to the LFP. On 5 February 2026, the league listed it as OM's last win in Paris in the top flight, and the next match in Paris, on 8 February 2026, ended in a PSG win.

The head-to-head record in numbers

The tables below have a cut-off of 8 February 2026, the last meeting between the two as of the check on 11 September 2026. The first follows the English Wikipedia, revision of 12 August 2026, checked match by match.

In Ligue 1 alone, the LFP counted 92 matches on 5 February 2026, with 39 PSG wins, 20 draws and 33 for OM; the 5-0 took that line to 93 matches and 40 PSG wins. Up to 8 February 2026, the overall lead of 18 wins came 7 from the league, in 93 matches, and 11 from the cups, in 19: taken together, the three cups gave 13 PSG wins, 4 draws and 2 for OM.

In head-to-head statistics, a penalty shootout counts as a draw. That is why the 2010 Trophée des Champions, 0-0 with the title going to OM, and the 2025 edition, played on 8 January 2026, 2-2 with the title going to PSG, are the 2 draws in the Trophée des Champions line, even though each of them handed the trophy to one side.

The totals come to 60 and 27, and the only row where the two are level is the Intertoto Cup, won by PSG in 2001 and by OM in 2005. PSG's website, consulted on 11 September 2026, counted 61 trophies because it included the 1971 second division title.

In 2025/26, Luis Enrique's side won the UEFA Super Cup, the Intercontinental Cup, the Trophée des Champions, Ligue 1 and the Champions League, according to the club. The French title, secured with a 2-0 win over Lens, was PSG's 14th, four more than any other side, and their fifth in a row, according to the LFP on 14 May 2026. The Champions League final, on Saturday 30 May 2026 in Budapest, ended 1-1 against Arsenal and 4-3 on penalties, and made PSG the first French club with two Champions League titles, after the one in 2025, a 5-0 win over Inter.

On 12 August 2026, already in the 2026/27 season, PSG beat Aston Villa 2-1 in Salzburg to win a second consecutive UEFA Super Cup, the 61st trophy on the club's list. On 16 August 2026, they lost the Trophée des Champions to Lens 1-0, at the Stade Bollaert-Delelis.

In the league, with the 2025/26 title, OM and PSG account for 18 of the 37 French titles awarded from 1988/89 to 2025/26, 5 for OM and 13 for PSG; the 1992/93 title was not awarded. 2025/26: three Classiques, three storylines

The first of the three Classiques of 2025/26, on the 5th matchday of Ligue 1, was postponed by 24 hours because of a storm in Marseille and played on Monday 22 September 2025, at the Vélodrome. OM won 1-0, the club's first home win over PSG in Ligue 1 since 2011, according to the LFP.

The second was the 30th Trophée des Champions, the 2025 edition, on Thursday 8 January 2026, at the Jaber Al-Ahmad International Stadium in Kuwait City. Dembélé opened the scoring in the 13th minute, Greenwood equalised from the penalty spot in the 76th, Pacho scored an own goal in the 87th and Gonçalo Ramos equalised at 90+5. PSG won the shootout 4-1, with goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier saving from O'Riley and Traoré. It was PSG's 14th Trophée des Champions, and their fourth in a row, according to the club.

The third was the 5-0 on Sunday 8 February 2026, at 20:45, at the Parc des Princes, on the 21st matchday of Ligue 1, with two goals and one assist from Ousmane Dembélé, according to the Associated Press. The second half brought an own goal by Facundo Medina, a goal from Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, set up by Dembélé, and the fifth, from Lee Kang-in.

The fixture's record holders

According to the LFP on 5 February 2026, the Swede Zlatan Ibrahimović was the leading scorer in Classiques, with 11 goals, a figure Wikipedia still showed in the revision of 12 August 2026. According to the same LFP, OM goalkeeper Steve Mandanda was the player with the most Classiques in all competitions: 30.

The LFP's runs apply to Ligue 1 only. Up to 5 February 2026, PSG's longest unbeaten run in the Classique had been 16 matches, from April 2012 to October 2019, and OM's 13, from September 1990 to November 1998. In the same LFP count, PSG's longest winning run had been 7, achieved twice, from February 2013 to February 2016 and from April 2022 to March 2025, and OM's 3. All three PSG runs began after 2011.

In the Ligue 1 2026/27 fixture list released on 10 June 2026, the Classiques were placed on the 5th matchday, in Marseille, and the 19th, in Paris, with provisional dates of 20 September 2026 and 7 February 2027, at 20:45, subject to scheduling constraints, according to franceinfo. On 31 August 2026, the LFP made the date of the Vélodrome fixture official, according to Foot01, and the match page on PSG's website showed the same Sunday, 20 September 2026, at 20:45, when consulted on 11 September 2026.
