Rayan: the £130m clause that would beat the English record

Bournemouth are not offering a discount. That is the message British transfer sites have attributed to the club since 17 September 2026 about the release clause of forward Rayan, valued at £130 million, around €150 million: whoever wants to sign him before his contract ends has to pay the full amount, with no room for negotiation. Andoni Iraola's Liverpool is the club with the most concrete contact, according to CaughtOffside and TeamTalk, which also picked up reports attributed to ESPN Brazil about the refusal of any reduction. No top-tier British outlet (The Athletic, Sky Sports, The Guardian, The Telegraph) has independently confirmed that specific detail as of 22 September 2026.

The clause has a detail that changes everything: it only becomes active from the January 2027 window onwards, according to journalist Jacob Tanswell of The Athletic, in a report from 2 June 2026. David Ornstein, also of The Athletic, returned to the £130 million clause on 9 September 2026; the summary published by CaughtOffside describes it as active from next summer, without mentioning January, and this piece follows the date in the original June report. In other words: as of 22 September 2026, no club can simply pay the fee and sign the player. Bournemouth are only obliged to sell once the clause takes effect, and even then it is the buying club's decision to trigger it, not Bournemouth's.

How the clause's value changed since the deal was signed

The jump from €100 million, at the announcement, to £130 million (€150 million) five months later has no public explanation: it could be a journalistic correction of the real figure from the start, or a step clause that rises with sporting triggers, such as a senior national team call-up, which Rayan fulfilled in March 2026. This piece therefore treats £130 million as the figure in force since June 2026, without repeating the €100 million from the announcement as if it were the current price. On the discount refusal: this reporting found no confirmation from a top-tier British source, only from transfer sites and from reports attributed to ESPN Brazil. The refusal therefore appears here as a report, not as a settled fact.

Why Liverpool, and who else is in the race

The fit starts with Mohamed Salah's exit, who left Liverpool at the end of the 2025/26 season after nine years at Anfield, despite having a contract until 2027, according to the club's official site. No top-tier British outlet has confirmed that lead as of 22 September 2026: The Athletic, Sky Sports, football365 and TeamTalk cite only Liverpool's contact. Treating Real Madrid as the favourite is, for now, a reading from a second-tier Brazilian source, not a consensus in the English press.

Who is Rayan

Rayan was born on 3 August 2006, in Rio de Janeiro. He joined Vasco at 6 years old, went through every youth category at the Barreira academy and was promoted to the first team in 2023, one of the youngest players to debut for the club this century, according to Vasco themselves. Brazilian and English media alike refer to the player only as "Rayan", a single name, a convention this piece also follows. The jump from 2 goals in 2024 to 20 in 2025 has all the hallmarks of a "late bloomer", but anyone who followed Vasco's youth ranks saw no surprise: the first division simply confirmed, on a bigger stage, what the Barreira already knew about the kid.

The sale that was already a record, and the contract signed weeks earlier

For the deal completed on 27 January 2026, Bournemouth paid a guaranteed £24.7 million, plus up to £5.6 million in add-ons, according to ESPN. In his debut season, 2025/26, it was 15 appearances, 5 goals and 2 assists in the Premier League, output that already justified European interest even before the 2025 breakout at Vasco entered the equation.

For the Brazil national team, Rayan received his first call-up in March 2026, under Carlo Ancelotti, and made his debut coming on in the second half of a 3-1 win over Croatia. Ancelotti named him on the preliminary 2026 World Cup list on 18 May and, at the tournament, he earned his first start on 24 June 2026, in a 3-0 group-stage win over Scotland. Wirtz and Anderson are also level, on £116 million, just below Morgan Rogers.

Morgan Rogers and Elliot Anderson do not reach that level: the £117 million and £116 million paid for them broke a different and narrower record, the highest fee for a player of British nationality, a category that includes neither Isak (Swedish) nor Enzo Fernández (Argentine) nor, if the clause is paid, the Brazilian Rayan. If an English club such as Liverpool pays the £130 million from January 2027, the clause would overtake the £125 million tie and become the highest fee ever paid by an English club, not just for a British player. Vasco had him for four full seasons from age 12 to 15, three full seasons from 16 to 18, and a fraction of the age-19 season, from his birthday on 3 August 2025 until the sale, 177 of the 365 days of that season.
