Grêmio vs Internacional: the history and numbers behind the Grenal

On the afternoon of 18 July 1909, Grêmio beat Internacional 10-0 in their very first meeting. The two clubs have since faced each other 454 times, and the nickname Grenal, coined only in 1926 by a journalist tired of writing both full names in every report, still labels the most argued-over derby in Rio Grande do Sul.

From the 1909 friendly to Grenal No. 454

That first Grenal was a friendly at the Baixada ground, then Grêmio's home, in front of roughly two thousand fans, and it ended 10-0 for the hosts. The name arrived almost two decades later: in 1926, journalist Ivo dos Santos Martins, a Grêmio supporter, coined Grenal to avoid spelling out both clubs every time, and it stuck, applied retroactively to the whole series. Across the 454 games since, the overall record actually leans toward Internacional: 166 wins against Grêmio's 144, with 144 draws, a gap built mostly in the decades when the old Campeonato Citadino and later the Campeonato Gaúcho pitted the rivals against each other almost every year.

In October 2008, the magazine Trivela polled Brazilian and foreign journalists and named the Grenal Brazil's biggest derby. The English magazine FourFourTwo repeated that verdict in April 2016 and went further, ranking the Grêmio-Internacional rivalry eighth among the biggest derbies in the world, ahead of rivalries with far larger fan bases.

The origin: a closed-off club created its own rival

Grêmio was born on 15 September 1903, when thirty-two men met at the Salão Grau, a restaurant inside a hotel on Rua 15 de Novembro, to found the club, inspired by a football exhibition the Sport Club Rio Grande had put on in the city eight days earlier. The new side's first match came on 6 March 1904, against Fussball Club Porto Alegre, founded that same day.

Six years later, the Poppe brothers tried to join Grêmio and were turned away: like most clubs in the city at the time, Grêmio only accepted players from Porto Alegre's German community. The answer came on 4 April 1909, when they founded Sport Club Internacional, with a stated mission to be open to every creed and race, the opposite of the club that had shut them out.

The rivalry also marked the two clubs' racial history. According to Internacional itself, the club began fielding Black players from 1927 or 1928, depending on the source, decades before its rival: Grêmio only had its first Black player in 1952, when it signed Tesourinha, who had already been an Internacional idol and arrived at Grêmio from Vasco da Gama.

Where and in what competitions the 454 games happened

Not every Grenal was played at today's stadiums. Over more than a century, the derby has been staged at at least 16 different venues, most of them in Porto Alegre. One alone, the Olímpico, hosted more Grenais than the Arena do Grêmio and the Novo Beira-Rio combined: 123 matches, against 28 and 25.

The breakdown by competition tells another story. The Campeonato Gaúcho accounts for more Grenais than any other tournament, followed by the defunct Campeonato Citadino, played until 1972, and the Campeonato Brasileiro across all its formats. The Copa do Brasil, Copa Libertadores and Copa Sul-Americana, the three competitions that put something beyond state pride on the line, add up to just 10 of the 454 games.

Players and coaches who have worn both shirts

Over more than a century, 257 players have worn both shirts, according to the oGol database, across every format of the game: names such as Dida, Giuliano, Anderson, Fábio Rochemback and Mário Fernandes have played on both sides of the derby. In the professional era, Tesourinha was only the most symbolic of a long list of swaps between the rivals.

Coaches have crossed over too. Adding up games managed on both sides of the Grenal, Sérgio Moacir Torres and Cláudio Duarte lead with 31 matches each, followed by Ênio Andrade with 27, Oswaldo Rolla with 26, and Celso Roth with 24.

Not every Gaúcho final is a Grenal

In this century, the two giants rarely settle the state title against each other: of 24 Campeonato Gaúcho finals played since 2001, only 8 were direct Grenais, a third of the total. In the other sixteen, one of the two faced an outside club, such as Juventude, Caxias or XV de Novembro.

The most remembered direct finals include 1976, when Internacional beat Grêmio 2-0, with goals from Lula and Dario, on the way to their eighth state title, and 1999, settled by a single goal from a young Ronaldinho Gaúcho, in a 1-0 win for Grêmio.

The taboo that only fell in 2026

Rarer still is a decisive Grenal outside Rio Grande do Sul: the two clubs have never met in a Copa do Brasil, Brasileiro or continental final, only in knockout rounds before the decider. And until 3 September 2026, it was always Internacional who advanced: in the 1988 Brasileiro semi-final, the 1992 Copa do Brasil quarter-final, the 1999 Libertadores qualifying round, and the 2004 and 2008 Copa Sul-Americana. The taboo of five meetings and a 100% record for Internacional only fell on that date, when Grêmio eliminated their rivals in the Copa do Brasil quarter-finals, 3-1.

Titles: Internacional ahead in the state league and the Campeonato Brasileiro, Grêmio ahead in the Libertadores

In the Campeonato Gaúcho, the state championship, Internacional counts 46 titles against Grêmio's 44, though the recent trophies show the rivalry still moving. Grêmio won seven straight editions through 2024, Internacional broke the run in 2025, and Grêmio took the title back in 2026, beating their rivals 3-0 and then 1-1, 4-1 on aggregate, over a two-legged final. In the Campeonato Brasileiro, counting the formats that predate the current round-robin league, Internacional also leads: three titles, in 1975, 1976 and 1979, against Grêmio's two, in 1981 and 1996.

The picture flips once the stage gets continental. Grêmio hold three Copa Libertadores titles, won in 1983, 1995 and 2017, against two for Internacional, in 2006 and 2010. Internacional answered in the one trophy Grêmio still lack, the Copa Sul-Americana, won in 2008, and both sides hold two Recopa Sul-Americana titles apiece. At the very top, each club keeps one world title: Grêmio beat Hamburg to win the 1983 Intercontinental Cup, and Internacional beat Ronaldinho's Barcelona to win the 2006 FIFA Club World Cup.

Despite the century-old rivalry, Grêmio and Internacional have almost never shared a continental knockout: their only two Copa Libertadores meetings came in 2020, with Grêmio winning one and drawing the other, 1-0 on aggregate across both legs.

The derby's top scorers

Carlitos, an Internacional winger from the 1930s and 1940s known as the Rolo Compressor (Steamroller), is the all-time top scorer in derby history: 40 goals in 58 games. On the Grêmio side, the record belongs to Luiz Carvalho, a forward from the same era, with 18 goals in 29 Grenais.

The fan base in numbers

Opinion polls show Grêmio slightly ahead among fans: in Datafolha's 2024 survey, the club took 4% of national preference against Internacional's 3%, up from 2% the year before. In absolute numbers, a 2022 Ipec poll for O Globo estimated Grêmio's fan base at 9.82 million people and Internacional's at 7.69 million.

As paying members, though, Internacional has historically had the edge: it was the first club in Brazil to launch a membership programme, in 2003, and had passed 120,000 members by 2020. Grêmio had 100,000 members in good standing as of May 2023.

The derby within the derby

The two clubs' mascots carry the same rivalry into another register. Grêmio adopted the Mosqueteiro (Musketeer), a character tied to the European culture that dominated among the club's founders. Internacional has the Saci, created by 1950s cartoons that portrayed a Black boy to link the club to the people's team, later reclaimed as the one-legged trickster of Brazilian folklore.

In 2023, Grêmio launched a second mascot to engage with that history: Flecha Negra, honouring Tarciso, a Black idol of the club between 1973 and 1986, in a declared anti-racism initiative. Back in 1984, the rivalry turned personal after Internacional defender Mauro Galvão taunted Renato Gaúcho over Grêmio's 1983 world title; the response was a friendly Grenal held purely to swap championship sashes.

The Grenais that became history

Some meetings outgrew the scoreline and became landmarks. The biggest rout of all came in that very first match, the 10-0 of 1909; in official competition, the record is Grêmio's 10-1 in the 1911 Campeonato Citadino. Internacional answered decades later with a 7-0 in the professional era, in 1948. The biggest crowd for a Grenal was recorded on 30 May 1971 at the Beira-Rio: 85,072 fans watched a 1-1 draw in the Campeonato Gaúcho. The most recent meeting between the two came in the Copa do Brasil, on 3 September 2026: Grêmio won 3-1 at the Arena in front of 55,695 supporters.

The derby has also produced episodes with little to do with the scoreline. In 2020, in the Copa Libertadores, a stoppage-time brawl ended in 8 red cards, four apiece, and became known as the 'Grenal at the end of the world': it was the competition's last match before the pandemic suspension. In 2015, the Beira-Rio tested a mixed-fans section, with supporters from both sides seated together; in 2021, the same stadium admitted only Internacional fans, after a Grêmio pitch invasion two games earlier.

The longest unbeaten runs also belong to Internacional: 16 games without defeat between 1947 and 1949, and 11 between 1952 and 1955, the latter matched by Grêmio's more recent run from 2019 to 2020. The record crowd for a national competition, meanwhile, escapes the derby's most famous stage: the 1992 Copa do Brasil drew 76,207 people to the Beira-Rio, more than the Brasileirão record between the rivals, though well short of the derby's all-time record, the 85,072 at the 1971 Gaúcho decider.

It is that mix of a close overall record and lopsided individual feats that has kept the Grenal alive for more than a century: neither side dominates outright, and every new trophy, whatever its size, reopens the argument over which chapter of the rivalry counts for more. For anyone growing up in Porto Alegre, the question about the next Grenal was never whether it would matter. It is only when it happens.
