Brazil's Série B: how promotion works and what the playoff changed

Brazil's Série B has 20 clubs, 38 rounds and four promotion places. Only two of those places belong to the table. The other two come out of a knockout between the clubs finishing third to sixth, and that is the part the CBF calls its new format.

On paper the change takes up two lines of regulation. In the dressing room it takes up a whole season. A club that spends ten months building a third-place finish needs two more matches to confirm what the table already said. And the club in sixth, which in a straight league would reach the final round with nothing left to play for, now has something to play after it.

How Série B is played

Twenty clubs play each other home and away: 38 rounds per club, from March to November. The regular season is the usual one, and so is the rule at the bottom: the last four after 38 rounds go down, and there the table decides on its own. Everything the new format changed sits at the top.

The four places are not worth the same

First and second go up directly, with no extra match. The other two places come out of two two-legged ties, seeded by position: third plays sixth, fourth plays fifth. Win and you go up. Lose and you play Série B again.

The first effect is one of price. If all four places came straight out of the table, the line that decides everything would sit between fourth and fifth, and sixth would have nothing to play for. With the playoff it drops to between sixth and seventh, and sixth becomes the last seat at a table where everything can still be won: two more places arrive at the final round with their season still open.

The second effect is one of risk, and it is asymmetric. The team in third enters the playoff having been better than the team in sixth across 38 matches, and still settles the place over two matches. How much of that advantage survives, meaning who hosts the second leg and how the tie is broken, sits in the competition's specific regulations rather than in the press release. That is where you read what a good campaign actually guarantees.

The English model risks less

The Championship is the obvious mirror, and the mirror gives back a different picture. It has 24 clubs and 46 rounds; the top two go up directly and only ONE place goes to the playoff, contested by six clubs, from third to eighth. The bracket runs single-leg quarter-finals at the better-placed club's ground, two-legged semi-finals and a single final, which the EFL stages at Wembley.

The contrast is the point of the comparison. The English model puts one place at risk and lets the regular season decide the other two. The Brazilian one puts two at risk, which is half the promotion, and has eight fewer rounds to separate the candidates beforehand. It is more knockout over a smaller sample, and that is a design choice rather than a detail.

The whole ladder is being rebuilt

The change does not stop at Série B either. The CBF has already announced that the 2026 edition of Série C is the last in its current shape, with 20 clubs: there will be 24 in 2027 and 28 in 2028.

A third division that gains eight clubs in two seasons does not fill itself. It fills from above, from below, or from both at once, and any of those doors changes how many clubs Série B sends down and takes in each year. Anyone trying to anticipate what Série B looks like in 2027 and 2028 should be watching Série C, not Série B.

Who goes down, and what waits below

At the bottom the rule is short: the last four after 38 rounds are relegated, and that part is still settled by the table. The division that receives them is the one about to grow, and its 2026 champion takes home more than the title: a place in the third round of the 2027 Copa do Brasil.

At the end of the season, then, there is not one table to watch. There are two: the one that decides champion and runner-up, and the one that decides who gets into the playoff. A club can produce the best second-half campaign in the division, finish fourth and still start the next year in Série B. In a format the CBF itself calls new, that is precisely the difference it introduced.
