Brentford beat Chelsea 3-0 for first home win over their neighbours since 1938

Brentford beat Chelsea 3-0 at the Gtech Community Stadium on Friday 18 September 2026, in both sides' fifth Premier League match of the season, to end a wait that spanned generations: it was the club's first home win over their west London neighbours since 1938. Jaidon Anthony, Igor Thiago and Fábio Carvalho scored, all in the second half, and Keith Andrews' side remain unbeaten in the league.

Chelsea's first half

The opening 45 minutes belonged to the visitors, as Chelsea's own report acknowledged. Their clearest chance came after nine minutes, when Danny Welbeck laid the ball off for Pedro Neto, whose first-time strike was palmed away by Caoimhín Kelleher. Morgan Rogers later had a goalbound effort blocked by Jannik Schuster, and the teams went in level at 0-0 after a frantic half of corners and long throws that rarely produced a shot.

The breakthrough came from a set piece. On 61 minutes Mikkel Damsgaard whipped a corner to the back post, Schuster headed it back across goal and an unmarked Jaidon Anthony nodded in from close range. It was Anthony's first goal for Brentford, who signed him from Burnley in the 2026 window. Early in the second half he had already headed against the crossbar, with the assistant's flag raised for offside.

With Chelsea pushing for an equaliser, Brentford struck on the counter. Damsgaard released Kevin Schade behind the defence, Emiliano Martínez saved the one-on-one and Igor Thiago converted the rebound. It was his first Premier League goal of the season and, according to Sky Sports, ended a seven-game drought. With virtually the last kick, Fábio Carvalho, on as a substitute in the 87th minute, turned in Schade's cross at the far post after a deflection off Josh Acheampong. It was his first Premier League goal since a near year-long injury lay-off. A record from 1938 and a best-ever start

The result carries more than three points. According to Jonathan Wilson's report for the Guardian, carried by the Irish Times, it was Brentford's first home win over Chelsea since 1938. Chelsea noted that it was their first defeat at the Gtech Community Stadium. By Brentford's count, nine points from five games is the club's best start to a Premier League season, beating the eight points of 2021/22. Their unbeaten home run in the league now stands at eight matches, stretching back to February.

The win took Brentford into third place at the end of Friday with nine points, behind only Arsenal and Manchester City, who had won all four of their matches. Chelsea were seventh on seven points. Chelsea's season has followed a familiar pattern: a fast start, then a fade. They won their first two games and have since gone three without a win, drawing one and losing two. Until Friday, Xabi Alonso's side had scored and conceded in every match; Brentford became the first team to keep them out this season. They have conceded 12 goals in five games and are still waiting for a first Premier League clean sheet.

A patched-up Chelsea

Alonso made five changes. Without Joao Pedro and Reece James, both listed as unavailable by the club, and without Moisés Caicedo, whose absence Sky Sports highlighted, he handed Jordan Henderson a Chelsea debut against his former club and gave Pep Chavarría, Valentín Barco and Danny Welbeck their first Premier League starts. It reflected a squad that, according to the Guardian, took in 11 new signings over the summer.

Among the changes was a debut: 16-year-old Mahdi Nicoll-Jazuli, named in a matchday squad for the first time, came on in the 87th minute for his first Chelsea appearance. At the other end, the substitution that completed the scoring was Carvalho's, who needed seven minutes on the pitch, stoppage time included, to find the net.

What the managers said

Alonso offered no excuses. Speaking to Sky Sports, the Chelsea head coach said he was disappointed with the second half and the result, adding: “This is not enough to compete in the Premier League.” Asked about Joao Pedro's absence, he said it was not about looking for excuses.

Andrews was plainly moved. He told Brentford's website he felt as though he had kicked every ball, and added: “I just loved us tonight. I loved everything about it.” Anthony described scoring his first goal for the club as an “unbelievable feeling” and revealed that Carvalho had told him a couple of days earlier that he was going to score.

What comes next

Chelsea do not play again until after the international break: according to the club, their next fixture is against Bournemouth at Stamford Bridge on Saturday 10 October. Brentford, watched by a crowd of 17,193, completed their first five matches unbeaten, with two wins and three draws, and with the best start in their Premier League history.
