Man City fight back from 2-0 down to draw at Bayern in the UWCL

Manchester City returned to the Women's Champions League with a draw that felt like a defeat for Bayern. On Tuesday, 22/09/2026, on matchday 1 of the 2026/27 league phase, the German side led 2-0 inside 28 minutes at the Sportpark Unterhaching, in front of 4,291 spectators, through Giulia Gwinn and a Kerstin Casparij own goal. Beth Mead pulled one back in the 45th minute, with a flare pouring blue smoke on the pitch; Khadija Shaw missed a penalty in the 62nd; and Carlotta Wamser equalised in the 86th. It was Bayern's first competitive match at the stadium the club bought in December 2025, and City became the first English club to leave Bayern's home without defeat in the Women's Champions League.

The scoreline hides two games. In the first half, José Barcala's Bayern pressed high, won the ball back in midfield and pinned City back. In the second, Andrée Jeglertz's side, in his first Champions League game as City coach, came out more active, won a penalty down the right, made three changes between the 63rd and 75th minutes and found the equaliser down the left. Overall, Bayern outshot City 15 to 8, but Opta's expected goals (xG), published by beIN SPORTS, give City 2.31 and Bayern 2.03. My reading: there was nothing stolen about this draw. And the match left a controversy bigger than the result: the flares that landed on the pitch exposed the first problem with Bayern's new stadium.

The table is best read through chance quality. Bayern took almost twice as many shots, but sent 9 of their 15 attempts wide, and the average across all of them was 0.14 xG per shot. City shot 8 times, hit the target 3 times (the two goals and the saved penalty) and produced 0.29 xG per shot, more than double. Part of City's 2.31 comes from Shaw's penalty, and Opta did not publish how much. City's 53% possession and 5 corners to 1 show the visitors with more of the ball overall; Bayern bet on winning it back and breaking fast and, when the press ran out of steam, ended up chasing the ball, as the club itself admitted. How Bayern went 2-0 up: high press, Dallmann and Casparij's own goal

From kick-off, Bayern's 4-2-3-1 jumped on City's build-up. In the 4th minute, Gwinn crossed from the right and Klara Bühl failed to hit the target at the far post. In the 11th, the goal came. Yui Hasegawa won the ball in midfield, but a mix-up with Sam Coffey handed it back to Linda Dallmann, according to the Japanese site Football Channel. Dallmann drove from the halfway line through the middle, unchallenged, and slipped it to the right, where Gwinn, playing at right-back and later named Player of the Match by UEFA, arrived to finish into the far corner past Ayaka Yamashita. City called it a counter-attack, and that is exactly what a high press promises: the ball won at the very moment the opponent opens up to attack.

Barcala told the club's website it was "one of the best first halves since I've been here" and explained why it deserved credit: pressing City is hard when the goalkeeper is involved in the build-up and the team creates numerical superiority. In Bayern's own description, Dallmann turned up on every loose ball, Harder floated between the lines and Bühl gave pace and depth out wide. City's only respite came when a Lauren Hemp cross deflected off Glódís Perla Viggósdóttir and hit the crossbar. Soon after, in the 28th minute, Pernille Harder got the better of her marker on the right and whipped in a cross, and Kerstin Casparij, trying to clear, turned it into her own net. Bayern could have gone in at half-time further ahead.

The flare during Mead's goal: what happened and what the Laws say

The 2-1 came from one of the last attacks of the first half, in the 45th minute. Casparij broke down the right and crossed low, Shaw's shot was blocked and the ball fell for Mead to tap into an empty net. As the move developed, flares flew from the stands: SPOX, with the SID agency, counted two, and t-online described one of them lying on the ball side of the pitch, pouring blue smoke, with red smoke by the touchline. According to Sky Sports, Casparij crossed before reaching the cloud. Spanish referee Olatz Rivera Olmedo let play go on, VAR checked the goal and found nothing to correct, and she then removed the device from the pitch with her own hands, to boos around the stadium.

At half-time, Bayern's director of women's football, Bianca Rech, told ZDF: "For me, the game has to be stopped." Her argument is that the object had been on the pitch for seconds and that players may have switched off, waiting for the whistle. IFAB's Law 5, however, in the version in force on the day of the game, only required play to be stopped when an outside object interfered with play; if it did not, play continued and the object was to be removed at the earliest opportunity. My reading is that the decision stands up: the cross was made before the cloud, and the Law asked for interference, not annoyance. Goalkeeper Ena Mahmutovic mentioned the smoke when talking about the goal, but refused to use it as an excuse: "We should have won this game," she told BR24Sport.

Sportpark Unterhaching, the stadium Bayern bought for more than €7.5 million

For the municipality, the sale took the stadium's upkeep off the budget; for Bayern, it gave women's football a home of its own. The turnout, however, fell well short of filling it: 4,291 spectators, less than a third of capacity, on a Champions League night against the English champions. In 2025/26, Bayern had played their games against Arsenal, Manchester United and Barcelona at the Allianz Arena, in front of 15,407, 25,000 and 31,000 spectators. My view: swapping the Allianz Arena for Unterhaching means trading a shop window for an identity, and identity is built with full stands and quiet nights, the two things missing on Bayern's competitive debut there. In its preview on 21/09/2026, the club was already taking ticket requests for Real Madrid and Barcelona at the same stadium.

The other cost is the neighbourhood. SpVgg Unterhaching, a former Bundesliga club that fell as far as the fourth tier, kept playing its home games at the stadium after the sale, and the club's president, Manfred Schwabl, admitted at the time that "at first there was certainly something to discuss" with the ultras. Bild attributes the flares to Unterhaching ultras, who allegedly threw them from a beer garden next to the stadium, and t-online, which even asked in its headline whether it was revenge, points out that blue and red are SpVgg's colours. Who threw them had not been confirmed as of 23/09/2026, and it is not treated as fact here. Gwinn summed up what matters: an object on the pitch "has no place in football".

Mahmutovic's penalty save and Wamser's 86th-minute equaliser

After the break, City came out more active, and both sides struggled to find a rhythm in a second half broken up by fouls in midfield. In the 62nd minute, Ena Mahmutovic rushed out to close down Aoba Fujino on the right of the box, seemed ready to let the ball run out and, according to Sky, stuck out a leg and brought down the Japanese winger. Penalty. Khadija Shaw, who according to Bayern had been top scorer in the Women's Super League (WSL), England's top flight, in each of the previous three seasons, stepped up, and the 22-year-old goalkeeper dived to her right to save. Shaw, who was already due to be substituted, went off a minute later along with Coffey: Mary Fowler and Laura Blindkilde Brown came on. In the 75th minute, Grace Clinton replaced Mead. Jeglertz's changes refreshed the midfield and the attack, and one of them would provide the assist for the equaliser.

By then, Bayern were no longer pressing as a unit. In the analysis published the next day, the club itself described the gaps between players growing and the shape becoming more porous, and Gwinn admitted the team started playing long balls and got nervous. In the 86th minute, the move ran from right to left: Fujino spread it to the right, Casparij carried it inside, Lauren Hemp found Blindkilde Brown, and she set up Carlotta Wamser, free on the left. Wamser took a touch and struck with her right foot into the near corner past Mahmutovic. And Bayern almost won it at the end: in stoppage time, Edna Imade headed a Bühl cross over from six yards, and beIN SPORTS counted two good chances created for her by Harder in the closing stages.

Wamser is the story of the night. Signed from Bayer Leverkusen on 31/08/2026, the German scored her first goal for City and her first in the Champions League on her return to her home country, playing at left-back, on the opposite flank to the one where she made her name, according to the club. Jeglertz explained the goal through her role: "Carlotta is in the penalty box as a left-back pretty often." Mead, signed from Arsenal on 12/06/2026 and deployed in the midfield line, also scored her first City goal, and the coach said she was learning a new role. Four Japanese players played the full 90 minutes: Yui Hasegawa, Aoba Fujino and Ayaka Yamashita for City, and Momoko Tanikawa for Bayern, who started as a holding midfielder and, in the second half, spent a spell further forward, according to Football Channel.

The 11 previous games match Opta's count: 7 wins and 4 defeats, with no draws. All six at home, across three Munich stadiums, ended in Bayern wins; the four defeats came in England, and in 2017 Chelsea went through on away goals after a 2-2 aggregate. That is why the accurate line needs a qualifier: City are the first English club not to lose at Bayern's home in the Women's Champions League, not the first to avoid defeat against them. The 3-2 over Arsenal on 12/11/2025 is the mirror image of the 2-2: that night, Bayern were 2-0 down and came back to win, with the winner in the 86th minute. Harder's name runs through the list: she scored for Chelsea against Bayern in 2021 and hit a hat-trick in the 5-2 of 2024.

Benfica won away at Juventus, and OL Lyonnes beat Servette 8-0 away from home. In the 2026/27 format, the second with a league phase, each of the 18 clubs plays six games: the top four go straight to the quarter-finals, and the sides finishing 5th to 12th play the play-offs in February. The league phase was scheduled to end on 16/12/2026, with nine simultaneous games. UEFA noted a coincidence, not a prediction: in the two previous seasons, Bayern's matchday 1 opponent went on to win the title, Arsenal in 2024/25 and Barcelona in 2025/26.

Harder's first chance to reach her 50th Champions League goal, a mark only Ada Hegerberg (69) and Eugénie Le Sommer (50) had reached according to Opta, was set for 30/09/2026, against Benfica in Lisbon; as of 22/09/2026, she had 49. Rech said Bayern must learn to play "at the limit for 90 minutes", and Mead that City have to repeat their second half "for 90 minutes". Two diagnoses for the same flaw.
