What every 2026 Ballon d'Or favourite is worth: the market doesn't follow the award
Yamal and Haaland tied at the top, 220 million euros each, while Messi, owner of eight Ballons d'Or, is worth just 15 million. What Transfermarkt says about the award's favourites.

Lamine Yamal and Erling Haaland share the highest market value among the 2026 Ballon d'Or favourites, 220 million euros each, according to Transfermarkt. Lionel Messi, holder of a record eight Ballons d'Or, is worth 15 million, the lowest figure in the group.
The top of the market isn't the top of the scoring charts
The market-value ranking bears little direct relation to who leads this season's stats or who has won the award most often. It blends age, position, resale potential and recent form, and the result is a list that looks quite different from the Ballon d'Or's scoring charts or roll of honour.
| Market value (Transfermarkt) | Age | Club | Value |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lamine Yamal | 19 | Barcelona | €220m |
| Erling Haaland | 26 | Manchester City | €220m |
| Kylian Mbappé | 27 | Real Madrid | €200m |
| Michael Olise | 24 | Bayern Munich | €170m |
| Vinícius Júnior | 26 | Real Madrid | €140m |
| Ousmane Dembélé | 29 | Paris Saint-Germain | €100m |
| Harry Kane | 33 | Bayern Munich | €60m |
| Lionel Messi | 39 | Inter Miami | €15m |
The age gap between the top two is the most striking part: Yamal is 19, Haaland is 26, and the market rates them exactly the same. Kane, with scoring numbers as good as either of them, is worth less than a third of that, 60 million, because he is 33 with far fewer resale seasons ahead of him.
Michael Olise, the surprise top scorer of the 2026/27 Bundesliga and one of the standouts of Bayern's Champions League opener, is worth 170 million euros at 24, the fourth-highest figure in the group, behind Yamal, Haaland and Mbappé.
Messi: the most decorated, the cheapest
No contrast is bigger than Messi's. He arrives at the 2026 Ballon d'Or with eight awards already on the shelf, more than any player in history, and a nomination that matches Cristiano Ronaldo's record of 18. On the market, though, he is worth 15 million euros, nearly 15 times less than Yamal or Haaland. At 39, age wipes out the résumé the moment the market has to put a price on him.
Real Madrid bets big on few names, PSG bets on volume
Real Madrid concentrate value in two names: Mbappé and Vinícius Júnior add up to 340 million euros, more than any other pair of Ballon d'Or nominees at the same club. Neither, though, lifted a major trophy this season.
Paris Saint-Germain go the opposite way. With ten Ballon d'Or 2026 nominees, the club does not have a single player among the most valuable in this group: Dembélé, their priciest, is worth 100 million, less than half of Yamal or Haaland. What's missing in individual value is made up for in collective silverware, with back-to-back Champions League titles.
Kane and Messi: the Ballon d'Or the market no longer pays for
Kane and Messi sum up the same phenomenon at two different stages. Kane, at 33, remained the most prolific scorer among the nominees last season, with 73 goals, and the market still credits that with 60 million euros. Messi, at 39, plays in MLS, still puts up impressive assist numbers (30 in the season that earned his nomination), but the market no longer sees him as an asset to protect, just a player whose commercial value has run its course.
| Player | Age | Market value | Ballons d'Or won |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lionel Messi | 39 | €15m | 8 |
| Harry Kane | 33 | €60m | 0 |
| Ousmane Dembélé | 29 | €100m | 1 |
| Kylian Mbappé | 27 | €200m | 0 |
| Erling Haaland | 26 | €220m | 0 |
| Vinícius Júnior | 26 | €140m | 0 |
| Michael Olise | 24 | €170m | 0 |
| Lamine Yamal | 19 | €220m | 0 |
The award looks backward, the market looks forward
The Ballon d'Or judges a season that has already happened: who scored more, who won what, between August 2025 and July 2026. Transfermarkt's market value tries to predict the opposite, how many years of top-level football a player has left and how much a club would pay today to secure that. They are different rulers measuring the same list of names, which is how Messi can be, at once, the most decorated player in history and the cheapest in the group.
Does market value reflect who deserves the Ballon d'Or?
This article said Michael Olise's 170 million euros were the third-highest figure in the group, behind only the pair at the top. By the table, Olise is fourth: Kylian Mbappé, on 200 million, is ahead of him too.
