Ballon d'Or 2026: who are the favourites and why

The 2026 Ballon d'Or now has a date and a stage: 26 October, at the London Palladium Theatre, the award's first time in the English capital in its 70-year history. Since France Football unveiled the 30 nominees on 8 September, one question has hung over the list, posed by the award's own official website: can you win the Ballon d'Or without having won the Champions League?

The numbers stacked in each contender's favour

Harry Kane arrives as the shortlist's lone top scorer: 73 goals in 65 games for Bayern Munich, the highest tally among the 30 nominees. Mbappé and Haaland share second place with 58 each, Messi has 45, and Mexico's Julián Quiñones rounds out the top five with 41. None of those five, though, lifted the Champions League or the World Cup in the cycle that counts for the 2026 award: Kane's and Haaland's trophies are all domestic, Mbappé has none at all this cycle, and Messi took Argentina to the World Cup final and lost.

The name the raw numbers hide is Michael Olise: the Frenchman's 35 assists for Bayern are the most of any nominee, ahead even of Messi's 30. Olise helped build the attack that also fed Harry Kane's goal tally, yet he picked up only the same domestic German honours as his teammate.

The trophy that weighs heaviest: European double-winners PSG, world champions Spain

Paris Saint-Germain have ten nominees on the official count, a third of the list, built on back-to-back Champions League titles under Luis Enrique. Most of them, from Dembélé to Vitinha, arrive with four or five trophies from the season, including the Champions League, the Intercontinental Cup and Ligue 1. It is the most stacked collective résumé on the entire list, and no other club comes close.

Spain have six nominees, the largest contingent of any country, and an argument no other nation can match: the world title, sealed on 19 July in New Jersey when Ferran Torres scored in the 106th minute against Argentina. Lamine Yamal, Pau Cubarsí, Marc Cucurella, Rodri and Fabián Ruiz round out the Spanish list, together holding the only World Cup among the 30 nominees.

The favourites, one by one

Ousmane Dembélé arrives to defend the title he won in 2025. The Frenchman scored 26 goals and set up 14 more in 51 games for PSG this cycle, keeping the same collective résumé that carried him to the title: the Champions League, Ligue 1 and further PSG silverware.

Lamine Yamal is up for a third straight nomination, still a teenager, with 25 goals and 20 assists for Barcelona, arriving, like the rest of the Spanish contingent, with the World Cup on his CV.

At 39 years and 76 days old, Messi is the oldest outfield player ever nominated this century and arrives at his 18th career nomination, matching Cristiano Ronaldo's all-time record. He scored 45 goals and set up 30 more for Inter Miami and Argentina, whom he led to the World Cup final. He already has eight Ballons d'Or, the award's outright record.

Kane, Mbappé and Haaland make the case of the pure goalscorer. Ahead of the 2026 list, Mbappé already had nine nominations and Kane eight, behind only Messi on the all-time count. None of the three, though, has a Champions League or a World Cup on this cycle's résumé, leaving them to hope the individual-performance criterion outweighs the collective one.

The calendar to London

The ceremony takes place on 26 October at the London Palladium Theatre, the award's first time in the English capital in its 70-year history. France Football created the trophy in 1956, and its first winner was England's Stanley Matthews, of Blackpool. From 2019 to 2025 the gala was held at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris; the move to London, per the official website, followed the calendar and FIFA's international window between 21 September and 6 October 2026.

None of the strongest candidacies covers all three criteria in the regulations on its own: decisive individual performance, collective achievement and class. That contest, not an obvious answer, is what should decide the night of 26 October.
