Yamal's trophies vs Mbappé's goals: the 2026 Ballon d'Or duel

On Friday, 18/09/2026, Movistar+ aired Lamine Yamal's interview on Universo Valdano, and he boiled the Ballon d'Or race down to a single line. The award, he said in Spanish, has to go "to the best player in the world, full stop", and not "to a player who has scored 80 goals", because that is what the Pichichi, LaLiga's top scorer trophy, is for. He named nobody, and the two targets the press saw in the line fell short of 80 goals in 2025/26: Harry Kane scored 73 for Bayern Munich and England, according to TNT Sports, and Kylian Mbappé finished the season with 58 for Real Madrid and France. The line landed in the middle of an exchange between Yamal and Mbappé that had begun on 07/09/2026.

The duel comes down to simple arithmetic, and the arithmetic does not add up. In 2025/26, Mbappé scored 58 goals in 60 games and was top scorer in LaLiga, the Champions League and the World Cup, yet finished the season without a single title. Yamal scored 25 goals, provided 20 assists and lifted three trophies: LaLiga, the Supercopa de España and the World Cup. In their head-to-head, the contradiction repeats itself in miniature: in the 11 matches between them, from 10/04/2024 to 14/07/2026, Yamal's team won 9 and Mbappé's 2, but the Frenchman scored 9 goals to the Spaniard's 6. One wins the spreadsheet; the other wins the match.

This comparison measures the two by the criteria they chose themselves and by the ones the debate tends to forget: assists, titles, head-to-head, the World Cup, numbers at the same age, career and market value. Soccer Addicted has already covered the winger duel between Vini Jr. and Lamine Yamal, the two striker archetypes of Haaland and Mbappé and the favourites for the 2026 Ballon d'Or; the question here is a different one, and it was put on the table by the protagonists themselves. Every number comes with a season or a date, and opinion, when it appears, is flagged as such.

The war of words between Yamal and Mbappé, from 07/09 to 22/09/2026

The first move was Mbappé's. On 07/09/2026, at a press conference in Madrid on the eve of Real Madrid v Inter in the Champions League, he was asked whether he was the best player in the world and replied that he always thinks so, "but it's very personal, everyone has their own opinion", according to franceinfo. In the same remarks, he said "this year could be the right one" to win the Ballon d'Or, while pointing out that it is the journalists who vote. In France it sounded like campaigning: on the Rothen s'enflamme podcast on RMC, Christophe Dugarry called publicly asking for an individual award "puerile and pitiful", all the more so for the captain of the national team, according to the Luxembourg newspaper L'essentiel on 08/09/2026.

The next day, Yamal took the opposite route. On 08/09/2026, at Barcelona's press conference before their Champions League opener against Feyenoord, he said he had done very good work over the year, recalled that "we were world champions and we won the league again" and handed the decision back to the voters: "That's your job". El Español put another of his lines in its headline, "I'm not going to beg for anything". It was the first contrast in style: the Frenchman asking for the prize out loud, the Spaniard pointing at the trophy cabinet.

The third move came on 14/09/2026, in a preview clip from Universo Valdano. "When it comes to the best in the world, I think maybe there are two of us, me and Mbappé," said Yamal, "but I think this year I would deserve it, for what I've won". Three days later, the newspaper AS published an interview in which Mbappé praised his rival: "I have the feeling that Lamine Yamal is going to have a great career". His own case he left to his feet: in Foot Mercato's translation, he said he can talk with his mouth, but that his "best lawyer" is his feet. One spoke of what he had won; the other, of what he had done.

The full interview aired on the night of 18/09/2026, and the 80-goal line gained its context. It came right after an argument against the team trophy: in beIN SPORTS' translation, Yamal said that when PSG win the Champions League, the trophy belongs to PSG, and that the Ballon d'Or should go to the best player in the world, whether he plays for PSG or not. He did not say who the 80-goal message was aimed at, and the readings split: beIN SPORTS measured it against Harry Kane's case, while Goal and TNT Sports published the Englishman's reply; Mexico's Heraldo Deportes saw it as a dig at Mbappé.

The same programme produced two lines with the Frenchman as the declared target. In one, picked up by AS and published by La FM on 21/09/2026, Yamal said: "We've faced each other head to head and I've beaten him at everything". In the other, he conceded that Mbappé "scored a lot of goals, and that's why he won the Pichichi", which says a lot about which yardstick he was trying to take off the table. Harry Kane replied on the night of 18/09/2026, after Bayern Munich's 7-0 win over Union Berlin, in comments highlighted by AS and reproduced by Goal: "I speak on the pitch," he said, and "the Ballon d'Or is not in my control".

In an interview with RFI, reported on 22/09/2026, Mbappé spelled out his own candidacy: he said he had a great year on an individual level, that he knows this is "the most important criterion for the Ballon d'Or" and that he was "top scorer in all the biggest competitions". Yamal's riposte came in an interview with L'Équipe, reported by Foot Mercato the same day and read here in the French version published by L'Avenir: "The advantage with me is that I was able to win the World Cup this year," he said, before adding that he thinks this is "logical". On 23/09/2026, the Belgian newspaper L'Avenir called the exchange a "playground squabble".

It is a good summary of the tone and a poor summary of the substance, because behind the jibes each of them picked the yardstick that suits him. Mbappé went for individual performance and goals. Yamal took goals and PSG's team trophy off the table and, days later, put his own trophy on it, the World Cup. It is not a flaw of character, it is campaigning: the jury weighs both things without any formula, and each candidate tries to tip the scales his way. The question that matters is what the numbers put on each side.

The Ballon d'Or regulations: individual performance first, titles second

The curious part is that the regulations prove each of them half right. Article 4 of the 2026 Ballon d'Or regulations, published on the award's official website on 07/09/2026, lists three criteria "in order of importance": first, individual performances and decisive and impressive character; second, collective performances and titles won; third, class and fair play. Going by the letter of the rules, Mbappé is right to call individual performance the most important criterion. But the text never mentions goals: it talks about being decisive, which is exactly the ground on which Yamal wants to play.

And the regulations rank, but they do not weigh. The text gives no numerical weight to any of the three criteria, and the decision rests with a jury of journalists, one per country, from the top 100 nations in the FIFA rankings, under Article 5. The period assessed, under Article 3, runs from 03/08/2025 to 19/07/2026, the day of the World Cup final: both players' entire season, World Cup included, down to the last minute of extra time in New Jersey. With the order set and the weighting left open, each juror decides how many goals a trophy is worth, which is why this duel has to be measured criterion by criterion.

How many goals Mbappé and Yamal scored in 2025/26

Let's start with Mbappé's criterion, which is also the easiest to measure. For Real Madrid, he scored 42 goals in 44 games in 2025/26, according to the club. In LaLiga it was 25 in 31, enough for a second straight Pichichi, ahead of Muriqi (23) and Budimir (17), a feat Real Madrid associates with names such as Di Stéfano, Puskás, Amancio, Hugo Sánchez and Cristiano Ronaldo. With his 16 goals for France, his season ended on 58 goals in 60 games, the same total TNT Sports records.

In the Champions League, the numbers carry even more weight. Mbappé finished the 2025/26 edition as top scorer, with 15 goals in 11 games, one ahead of Harry Kane, and in the 2025/26 league phase alone he scored 13 goals in 7 matches, a competition record for that stage, according to UEFA. Among them were all four in a 4-3 win over Olympiacos in Greece, with the first three coming within seven minutes. A knee injury kept him out of two knockout games, and even so he scored in both quarter-final legs against Bayern Munich, who went through 6-4 on aggregate. Only Cristiano Ronaldo had scored more in a single edition: 17, in 2013/14.

For France, the 2025/26 count closed at 16 goals in 16 games: 5 in 4 World Cup qualifiers, 1 in 4 friendlies, against Brazil on 26/03/2026, and 10 at the World Cup. At Real Madrid, on top of the 25 in LaLiga and the 15 in the Champions League, came 2 in his only Copa del Rey appearance, a 3-2 win over Talavera on 17/12/2025. That makes 58 against Yamal's 25, more than double, and the scoring title on three fronts. If the Ballon d'Or were a top scorer's trophy, this piece would end here.

Yamal's 25 goals are spread differently. For Barcelona he scored 24 in 45 games: 16 in LaLiga, 6 in the Champions League, 2 in the Copa del Rey and none in the 2 Supercopa de España matches, according to a tally of ESPN's match logs. His 16 LaLiga goals earned him the Zarra Trophy, shared with Ferran Torres, according to Barcelona, and included a hat-trick against Villarreal on 28/02/2026. For Spain, it was 1 goal in 12 games, in the 4-0 win over Saudi Arabia at the World Cup on 21/06/2026.

Here lies the strength of the Frenchman's argument, and also its limit. A goal is the most objective data point in the game, and some goals decide matches on their own: take away Mbappé's four in the 4-3 win over Olympiacos and the score becomes 0-3. As I read it, that is the kind of goal the regulations call decisive character. The limit lies at the other end of the season: Real Madrid finished 2025/26 without a single trophy, and trophies are exactly what the second criterion in the regulations asks for.

Assists in 2025/26: Yamal 20, Mbappé 13

On assists, the game turns. Yamal finished LaLiga 2025/26 with 11 assists, and no other player in the league provided as many passes leading to goals, according to Barcelona, in its report on his LaLiga player of the season award. With 4 in the Champions League, 2 in the Copa del Rey and the 3 he provided for Spain in the qualifiers, against Bulgaria and Turkey, in September 2025, the total was 20. Mbappé provided 13: 6 for Real Madrid and 7 for France, 4 of them at the 2026 World Cup. In goals plus assists, the Frenchman wins even so, 71 to 45.

The difference in profile explains the difference on the spreadsheet. Transfermarkt lists Yamal as a left-footed right winger and Mbappé as a right-footed centre-forward, and the role changes the question each one answers on the pitch. The inverted winger receives wide, pins the full-back and attacks the half-space from the outside in: he lives off creating an advantage for a teammate, and the move often ends at someone else's feet. The centre-forward lives off occupying the box at the right moment, and the goal is the last action of the move, not the one before it. Measuring the two by goals alone means measuring the winger with the centre-forward's yardstick.

This is the point where Yamal's argument, that the best player in the world is recognised by watching the game and not by adding up goals, stops being mere rhetoric. On 01/09/2026, the AFE, the Spanish footballers' association, gave him the award for best player in the Primera División in 2025/26, decided by the votes of the players themselves, according to Barcelona. "There is nothing better than your fellow players voting for you," Yamal said at the ceremony in Madrid. A vote from peers does not show up on a spreadsheet, but it is the jury that sees most closely who makes the difference: anyone who has had to mark Yamal knows what it costs.

Titles in 2025/26: three for Yamal, none for Mbappé

Yamal's criterion is the second in the regulations, and on it the score is a rout. Barcelona won LaLiga 2025/26 with 94 points, 8 more than Real Madrid, according to ESPN's table: 31 wins, 1 draw and 6 defeats in 38 games, with 95 goals scored, against the rival's 27 wins, 5 draws and 6 defeats. With the same number of defeats, the title was decided by Barcelona's 4 extra wins. On 11/01/2026, Barcelona also beat Real Madrid 3-2 in the Supercopa de España final, with both players on the pitch and neither scoring.

In the cups, neither went all the way. Barcelona lost the Copa del Rey semi-final to Atlético Madrid 4-3 on aggregate, 0-4 in the first leg and 3-0 in the second, and went out in the Champions League quarter-finals to the same Atlético, 3-2 on aggregate. Real Madrid were knocked out of the Copa del Rey by Albacete, 3-2, on 14/01/2026, and the same Albacete would lose at home to Barcelona, 2-1, on 03/02/2026. In the Champions League, Real went out in the quarter-finals to Bayern Munich, 6-4 on aggregate, with Mbappé scoring in each leg.

With the national teams, the gap became a chasm. Spain were crowned world champions on 19/07/2026, and France finished the World Cup in fourth place, after losing the semi-final to Spain and the third-place match to England, 6-4, on 18/07/2026. In 2025/26, that makes three titles on Yamal's side (LaLiga, the Supercopa de España and the World Cup) and none on Mbappé's. In my view, blaming Mbappé for Real Madrid's season is only half fair: he did his part in goals, but the second criterion in the regulations does not ask whose fault it was.

Head-to-head: in their 11 meetings up to 14/07/2026, Yamal won 9 and Mbappé scored 9 goals

The head-to-head is the paradox in miniature. According to ESPN's match logs, the two were on the pitch together in 11 matches, from 10/04/2024 to 14/07/2026, for clubs and countries. Yamal's side won 9, and Mbappé's only 2: PSG's 4-1 win over Barcelona in the Champions League on 16/04/2024, and Real Madrid's 2-1 win in the Clásico on 26/10/2025. In those same 11 matches, Mbappé scored 9 goals and Yamal 6. Planet Football, on 14/07/2026, credited Yamal with an 80% win rate, 8 wins in 10 meetings; the World Cup semi-final, played that same day, took the count to 9 in 11.

Three games tell the story better than the average. In the Clásico of 11/05/2025, in LaLiga, Mbappé scored three goals, and Barcelona won 4-3, with one goal from Yamal. In the Nations League semi-final on 05/06/2025, Spain beat France 5-4, with two goals from Yamal against a goal and an assist from Mbappé. And in the European Championship semi-final on 09/07/2024, Yamal scored in Spain's 2-1 win, while Mbappé provided the assist for France's goal. In all three, the Frenchman produced and the Spaniard won.

In the 2026 Ballon d'Or window, they met three times. Real Madrid won 2-1 on 26/10/2025, with Mbappé scoring in the 22nd minute. Barcelona won the Supercopa de España final 3-2 on 11/01/2026, with no goal from either. And Spain knocked France out 2-0 in the World Cup semi-final on 14/07/2026, with Yamal winning the penalty for the first goal. To my mind, a head-to-head between a winger and a centre-forward says more about the teams than about the two players, but one detail carries weight: the two games that were worth a trophy or a place in a final went Yamal's way.

2026 World Cup: Yamal's title and Mbappé's 10 goals

No tournament sums up the stalemate better. At the 2026 World Cup, Mbappé scored 10 goals and provided 4 assists in 8 games, finished as top scorer and, according to L'essentiel, became the World Cup's all-time leading scorer. By a tally of ESPN's match logs, he left the 2026 tournament with 22 goals across three World Cups: 4 in 2018, 8 in 2022 and 10 in 2026. Even so, France did not get past the semi-final: they lost 2-0 to Spain on 14/07/2026 and, four days later, also lost the third-place match to England 6-4, despite two goals and an assist from him.

Yamal arrived at the World Cup after a hamstring injury, according to ESPN, played all 8 of Spain's matches and scored 1 goal, in the 4-0 win over Saudi Arabia. His most decisive moment came in the semi-final against France at Dallas Stadium: Digne's foul on him inside the box produced the penalty that Mikel Oyarzabal converted in the 22nd minute, and Pedro Porro added the second in the 58th. In the final, on 19/07/2026, in New Jersey, Spain beat Argentina 1-0 after extra time, with a goal from Ferran Torres in the 106th minute, and Yamal was on the pitch.

Yamal himself did not sell his World Cup as a masterpiece. "For another player, with my performance, it would have been a great World Cup, but not for me," he said on Universo Valdano, according to Infobae. L'Avenir went further and wrote that he was not the best player in his own team, a role the newspaper gave to Rodri. As I see it, the 2026 World Cup is at once Yamal's strongest and weakest argument: it carries weight through the trophy, which the regulations count under the second criterion, and little through his performance, which the regulations put first. Mbappé had the individual World Cup that Yamal did not, and went home without a medal.

Yamal and Mbappé at 19: the numbers at the same age

The comparison at the same age starts in the Spaniard's favour, and the count is not ours: it is Planet Football's, which compared the two up to their 19th birthdays in a study published on 14/07/2026. Yamal, born on 13/07/2007 in Esplugues de Llobregat, reached 19 with 182 senior games, 56 goals and 64 assists, 120 direct goal contributions. Mbappé, born on 20/12/1998 in Paris, had 90 games, 39 goals and 29 assists, or 68 contributions. That is just over twice as many games, and the site sums up the contrast: at 19, Yamal was already establishing himself as Barcelona's main star.

Efficiency, however, belongs to Mbappé. Up to the age of 19, he scored a goal every 138 minutes, against one every 238 for Yamal, and none of his 39 goals had come from the penalty spot; 7 of Yamal's goals were penalties and, without them, his rate drops to one goal every 273 minutes. Counting goals and assists, the Frenchman was involved in a goal every 79 minutes; the Spaniard, every 111. On the pitch, that means: Yamal played more and earlier, and Mbappé needed less time on the pitch to make the difference. Both facts are true at the same time, and that is what makes the comparison a good one.

On titles, the advantage swings back to Yamal. By the time he turned 19, on 13/07/2026, he already had 7 senior titles: 3 LaLiga titles, 1 Copa del Rey, 2 Supercopas de España and the 2024 European Championship. Mbappé reached 19, on 20/12/2017, with 1: the 2016/17 Ligue 1, with Monaco. And both became world champions at 19: Yamal on 19/07/2026, aged 19 years and 6 days, and Mbappé on 15/07/2018, aged 19 years and 207 days, going by their dates of birth and those of the two finals. The Spaniard lifted the World Cup 201 days younger than the Frenchman.

Career titles and awards up to 23/09/2026: 20 titles for Mbappé, 8 for Yamal

Over a career, the order flips again, and comfortably. Up to 23/09/2026, Mbappé had 20 senior titles, according to Transfermarkt's list. They were 7 Ligue 1 titles (one with Monaco and six with PSG), 4 Coupes de France, 3 Trophées des Champions, 2 Coupes de la Ligue, the 2018 World Cup, the 2021 Nations League and, with Real Madrid in 2024/25, the UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Intercontinental Cup. Yamal had 8, according to the same list: the 2026 World Cup, the 2024 European Championship, 3 LaLiga titles, 1 Copa del Rey and 2 Supercopas de España. By that date, neither had won the Champions League; Mbappé was a runner-up in 2019/20, with PSG.

On individual awards, the score tightens. Yamal was 8th in the 2024 Ballon d'Or and 2nd in 2025, behind Ousmane Dembélé, according to ESPN, and in 2025 he became the only player to win the under-21 Kopa Trophy more than once, having also taken it in 2024. Mbappé won the Kopa in 2018 and, according to franceinfo, finished in the Ballon d'Or top ten in every edition from 2017 to 2025, with 3rd place in 2023 as his best finish. Both won the Golden Boy, the Frenchman in 2017 and the Spaniard in 2024. On the Ballon d'Or's own scale, Yamal had already gone further: 2nd in 2025, against Mbappé's 3rd in 2023.

In top-scoring awards, Mbappé's lead was wide on 23/09/2026: the European Golden Shoe for 2024/25, with 31 goals; two straight Pichichis, in 2024/25 and 2025/26; two Champions League top-scorer titles, in 2023/24 (shared with Kane) and 2025/26; six Ligue 1 scoring titles, from 2018/19 to 2023/24; and the World Cup Golden Boot in 2022 and 2026. Yamal had the 2025/26 Zarra Trophy, shared with Ferran Torres. On the other hand, the player of the season awards for 2025/26 in Spain went to him: LaLiga's and the AFE's, voted for by the players. Mbappé took the Mahou Five Star award, Real Madrid's player of the season prize for 2025/26, for the second year running.

Market value and contracts of Yamal and Mbappé

In the market, the younger man was worth more in 2026, but only just. In Transfermarkt's update of 22/07/2026, Yamal was valued at €220m and Mbappé at €200m. In the site's ranking of the most valuable players, consulted on 23/09/2026, the Spaniard shared 1st place with Erling Haaland, and the Frenchman was 3rd. For me, a €20m gap is small for an age difference of more than eight and a half years: market value usually pays for the future, and the 58-goal season held up the Frenchman's price.

The contracts spell out each player's horizon. Yamal renewed with Barcelona on 27/05/2025, with a deal running until 30/06/2031, and joined the first-team squad on 01/07/2023, according to Transfermarkt. Mbappé arrived at Real Madrid on 01/07/2024, on a contract until 30/06/2029. At international level, up to 23/09/2026, Yamal had 33 caps and 7 goals for Spain, and Mbappé 106 caps and 66 goals for France. And the 2026/27 season started level on goals: in the first 7 LaLiga games for each, up to 23/09/2026, both had 7 goals, with 4 assists for Yamal and 2 for Mbappé.

Who is better, Yamal or Mbappé: the score criterion by criterion

Put into a single table, the duel is level on the number of criteria and uneven on the weight of each. Mbappé takes six: goals, top-scoring titles, goals plus assists, goals in the head-to-head, efficiency at the same age and career titles. Yamal takes the other six: assists, titles of the season, wins in the head-to-head, volume at the same age, best Ballon d'Or finish and market value. The 2026 World Cup is split, with Yamal's title and Mbappé's Golden Boot.

If the vote were mine, it would go to Mbappé, by a narrow margin. The regulations ask first for decisive individual performance, and Yamal did not have an individual 2025/26 season like the Frenchman's: 58 goals and the scoring title in LaLiga, the Champions League and the World Cup. Yamal has the better argument on the second criterion and won the two meetings in the window that were worth a trophy or a place in a final, but he himself admitted that his World Cup fell short of what he demands of himself. That does not diminish him: I would say nobody decided as many games without needing to score in 2025/26. But the Ballon d'Or, by the letter of Articles 3 and 4, judges a season, not a talent.

The calendar made sure the question stayed open. Voting by the journalists was due to close on 28/09/2026, according to Foot Mercato; Barcelona v Real Madrid in LaLiga 2026/27 was scheduled for 25/10/2026, with Barcelona at home, according to ESPN's fixture list; and the Ballon d'Or ceremony was scheduled for 26/10/2026, in London. The Clásico fell on the eve of the gala and outside the award's window, which closed on 19/07/2026. When this piece was checked, on 23/09/2026, the head-to-head series stood at 11 matches, with 9 wins for Yamal's side and 9 goals for Mbappé.
