Match report
Newcastle United and Liverpool opened the 2026/27 Premier League season with a 2-2 draw at St James' Park on 23 August 2026, in Matchweek 1. Anthony Elanga struck after five minutes to put the hosts in front, and that 1-0 lead held to the interval. Cody Gakpo levelled on 55 minutes, Joe Willock restored the Newcastle advantage two minutes later, on 57, and the visitors were chasing once more.
Newcastle were 2-1 up deep into stoppage time when Lewis Hall brought down substitute Víctor Munoz inside the area. Referee Stuart Attwell pointed to the spot immediately, a protracted VAR check left the decision standing, and Dominik Szoboszlai drove the kick into the top corner at 90+9, the final act of the match. There were no red cards, and the two points Newcastle had all but banked disappeared with the last kick.
The draw leaves both clubs on a point from their opening fixture, though Newcastle will feel it more keenly: they led twice at home and were seconds away from three. Liverpool salvaged something from a match in which they trailed for the best part of an hour. Four goals, from the fifth minute to 90+9, and Newcastle led or were level throughout, with the last of them landing when there was nothing left to play.
