Conference League: nobody enters directly, and a third of the league phase arrived by losing

In the 2026/27 Champions League, 29 clubs entered the league phase without playing a single qualifying tie. In the Conference League that number is zero. All 36 that play the league phase got there through qualifying, without exception, and that is what separates Europe's third competition from the other two.

But the figure hides a split that changes everything. Of those 36, only 24 won the Conference League's own play-off. The other 12 arrived by losing: they are the beaten sides from the Europa League play-off, who drop straight into the Conference League phase instead of ending their European season. Exactly a third of the field came in through the door above, and came in because it was knocked out.

Three league phases of 36, filled three different ways

All three UEFA competitions end up with the same number of clubs in the league phase. What changes is where they come from, and the gap between the three columns is the gap between sitting at the top of the system and sitting at its base.

Read the Champions League column top to bottom, then the Conference one: they are almost mirror images. In the Champions League, qualifying decides seven seats and twenty-nine clubs are already seated when it starts. In the Conference, it decides all of them, and even so a third of the room is taken by clubs that were trying to sit somewhere else.

Four knockout rounds, from July to August

In 2026/27, those climbing from below faced four rounds: first, second, third and the play-offs. All over two legs. The first began on 7 July, before most domestic leagues had kicked a ball, and the last was settled on 27 August.

The round a club enters at is neither drawn nor chosen: it comes from the coefficient ranking of the association it belongs to. A club from a well-placed country enters late; a club from a poorly placed one enters in July.

The field grows before it shrinks

Look at the middle column in the table above. In 2026/27 the first round had 52 clubs and the second had 98: almost double. That is not an arithmetic slip. Round by round, the Conference takes in the clubs knocked out of Champions League and Europa League qualifying, and that intake is larger than the outflow of those who have just lost.

It is a competition that doubles as a safety net for two others, and that changes what winning a tie in it means. The opponent of a club that came through the first round is not another club that came through the first round: it may be one that was playing Europa League qualifying three weeks earlier and lost. Qualifying across the three competitions was designed to guarantee that clubs from at least 37 associations reach some league phase.

The two paths, and who is on each

The rounds split into two brackets that never meet. The Conference League's champions path begins with the clubs knocked out of the Champions League first qualifying round: 12 of the 14 beaten there enter at the second round. The main path gathers everyone else, and it is the only one that exists in the first round.

The left column starts at zero and the right one starts at 52, and that asymmetry is the design. Clubs dropping from the Champions League enter later and play fewer ties; clubs on the main path may have to play all four. Two doors into the same room, with corridors of different lengths.

Four wins, or one defeat

The final piece of arithmetic is the one worth keeping. Four two-legged ties are eight matches, and a club entering on 7 July has to win all four to reach the league phase. That is eight European matches before earning a first point, in a period when most squads on the continent are still in pre-season.

A club that dropped out of the Europa League play-off reaches the same league phase by the opposite route: it lost. It did not win four ties, it lost one, and that was enough. Both go into the draw on zero points with the same fixture list ahead, and only one of them had to win anything to be there.

Two thirds of the Conference League happen before the league phase

Everything this guide has said so far comes from the regulations. The rest comes from our own match archive, and the first measurement is already disconcerting. Across the two complete seasons we hold, the Conference League played 409 matches per season. Of those, 256 were in July and August, before the league phase began.

That is 63% of the competition played before the first round of the league phase. The split between the two months moves from one year to the next, 110 and 146 in one season, 148 and 108 in the other, but the qualifying total does not budge: 256 in both. The tournament the public follows from October is the final third of another tournament, which has already happened.

And those who climb arrive better, not worse

The natural suspicion is that eight qualifying matches come at a price. A club climbing since July would reach the league phase spent, while one dropping from the Europa League play-off would arrive intact. We measured the 2024/25 and 2025/26 league phases, 216 matches and 72 club places, and the result runs the other way.

Surviving the cut is practically identical for both groups, about two thirds of each. The difference is at the top: 13 of the 48 that climbed finished in the top eight, against 3 of the 24 that entered directly. In proportion, 27% against 13%, twice the rate. And those who climbed took 1.44 points per match against 1.29. The positions were rebuilt from the archive's results, ordered by points, goal difference and goals scored.

In 2025/26 the pattern goes to the extreme: seven of the top eight climbed through qualifying. But two seasons are not a law, and the archive itself holds the counter-example. SK Rapid entered the league phase directly in 2024/25 and finished fourth; they climbed through qualifying in 2025/26 and finished thirty-sixth, last of all. The route explains a tendency, not a destiny.

That is why reading the Conference League does not start at the league phase draw. It starts with the list of who entered at which round, on which path, and how many ties each already has in the legs when the competition proper begins. Anyone looking only at the field of 36 has missed the most revealing part of the story.
